Subject: Hermes Final Final Message...

Back by Popular Demand/A Reprieve from Astraea
HERMES' PRESENTS: The FINAL FINAL MESSAGE
by Richard DePersio and Citizen Journalist
Desert to Space...
Astraea: "Hermes may I have the floor, or, should I say the deck of
your comsat?' Hermes: "How can I refuse you, my fair beauty."
Astraea: "In the olden days, people lived in peace, but, then
came robbing and wars. I found unhappiness everywhere that
I went. Only one option was left: live in the heavens. I had a
stork of wheat which broke and scattered grain across the sky:
the stars. It has been said that only those who love peace and
justice can see the Virgin (Virgo is one of my other names). All
these years am I still...none of your business. Watch it! Zeus is
my father."
The Delta Clipper became more advanced when it became
the responsibility of NASA: DC-XA or Clipper Advanced. It
would take off and land vertically. Testing ended in '96.
It was conceived for low earth orbit. There are NASA
engineers who wish to reactivate it and develop it into a
rocket for moon and Mars landings.
Hermes primarily funded by France as part of ESA was to
be a reusable shuttle for transporting crews and equipment
to the space station and repairing sats in orbit. It also would
have placed sats in orbit in unpiloted missions. It was
canceled in the early '90s. Hermes: "Thank the gods, I
don't want my name associated with the smelly French!
I'm Greco-American now. I have my citizenship papers. I
voted for Romney. I'm a fan of Apple Pie and Rizogalo."
The Boeing 707 jet went into service in '57 for commercial
flights and deregulation of the airliners in '78 were the
two events that made air travel affordable to the all the
upper-middle class and some mid-middle class in '57 and
all mid and many lower in '78.
The total power = Pi (Induced power: the power required to
maintain enough lift to overcome the force of gravity) + Pp
(power needed to overcome drag). To cruise your engine
does nothing more than fight drag.
The magic speed is the speed at which there is the least
amount of drag (it varies from one type of plane to another).
Go slower or faster and you have more drag.
As we explained four stages down, it is incorrect to say that
the shape of the wing causes lift and enables plane to stay
in the air. That's not to say that the shape of wing isn't
important. The aerobatic airplane's wings are symmetric and
thick; further, they have great deal of curvature on the top
and the bottom. This enables slow flight. In contrast, jets
have thin, symmetric wings for fast flight.
Aspect ratio - the ratio of the length of a wing to its width:
High: Long, narrow wings; less fuel consumption - can keep
at constant speed longer -- airliners.
Low: short, wide wings; more fuel to maintain cruise speed;
swift maneuverability - X-15, most fighter jets.
High: can take off at a lower speed than Low; when speeds
are the same, high can carry a larger load.
Moderate: in between; see drawing below.
Edwards Air Force Base is home to 412th Test Wing, USAF
Test Flight School and NASA'sDryden Flight Research Center.
Rogers Dry Lake is there because its a desert. Flat expanses
covered with salt and other minerals called a salt pan. Large,
dry and hard, it serves as an extension to Edwards regular
runways and is a National Landmark which appears white most
of the day due to the sun. The X-1, X-15 were
tested there. Space shuttle landed here in California when
weather prevented landed in Florida. Who knows what secret
planes are being tested here now and being mistaken for flying
sauces!?!
Deserts: About 25% of the earth is desert and located in the
subtropics. There is 0 to 15 inches of rain per year. Some
deserts more but doesn't last long: evaporation faster than
precipitation. It supports only sparse vegetation.

                         HERMES FINAL MESSAGE
by Richard DePersio with Citizen Journalist
Hermes: "It appears as if I'll be flying away. It seems like
only yesterday that I arrived. I got my nearly finalized walking
papers from the BIG Guy...no; not Zeus...Citizen Journalist."

Let's talk trash...no, you won't have to wash you f'n mouth out
with soap...space garbage, that is. It has become a major threat
to manned and unmanned space exploration and exploitation.
Since Sputnik 1 was launched in '57 (A temporary aside
{where's the Adderall?}: It despicable that we have to pay Russia
to get to the space station for which we footed most the bill. It's a
disgrace too: we who won the Space Race to the Moon! We
know that deep spending cuts are dictated by BO's Debt Crisis.
Nonetheless, his canceling the Constellation Program meant
turning money spent up to that point into wasted money and
many lay-offs. Sometimes canceling a program doesn't result
in expected savings. The makers of Atlas, United launch
Alliance, have indicated that they could achieve manned
launches by 2014, about 3 years ahead of companies like
SpaceX! It would make Atlas happy. Remember: Since NASA's
inception in '58, it has been completely or partially responsible
for over 30,000 inventions and discoveries; for every $ budgeted
to NASA, you get a return of about $5 over 7 years; it is one
of the few fed gov entities that work. It too must take cuts but
they should be sparingly. We should return to the moon - BO
is wrong - for scientific exploration and for He3 and silicon; we
should develop nuclear thermal propulsion for solar system
exploration. We should do these things in conjunction with our
real Friends {except certain aspects - not all - which might have
commercial applications}: UK; Canada, Australia, Japan, Czech
Republic, Poland,  India, Guyana, Israel and UAE - the latter
two will have to work out their differences. Obviously, some
can't contribute as much as others. Getting back to Atlas, ULA,
also is considering entering the space tourist business.
Initial flights would be expensive. NASA would keep ULA
fiscally viable until tourist business gets off of the ground.
Just barely with 1 - 3 flights per year for they would be
expensive {NASA must contribute to debt reduction but
exempt from the BIG Axe for reasons given. For more info
on these issues, please visit stages below --- good news:
elevator has been repaired). Where were we...you, in the
front row...since '57...right....Since '57, litter has been
accumulating in the space environment at a perilous rate.
It includes spent rocket stages, defunct satellites, explosion
and collision fragments, mission-related debris. Small
Category: objects smaller than a grain of sand; as they are
so small, it's not possible to detect them from the ground.
Medium Category: A grain of sand to about the size of a
melon; tens of millions fall into this category. Large
Category: A melon or larger; over 22,000 are tracked. By
the way, there are about 700 working spacecraft and sats in
orbit.
Space debris can render a satellite inoperative and can
kill astros aboard spacecraft. Think about this when you fall
asleep: a piece of space debris could strike the earth
unexpectedly or even if trajectory is known nothing can be
done to alter it. Scientists are working on the latter issue.
Goodnight. But wait!...
Nature of mission and funds will dictate the rocket employed.
Most common is serial staging: one stage mounted on
another. The most famous example is the Saturn 5. Another
method is parallel staging wherein usually solid rocket
boosters are strapped usually to the first stage. The boosters
are sometimes referred to as zero stages. The most famous
example is...correction: sadly, was the Space Shuttle. The
Titan 3 is a famous example of a combo: serial and parallel
staging. If the payload is destined for an orbit higher than
600 miles or is leaving earth orbit, a 3-stage rocket is
usually used.
Multi-staged (serial) rocket's first stage once fuel is
consumed fall into the ocean while the other stages either
burn up in the earth's atmosphere or are added to our
collection of space debris and orbit the earth until their orbit
decays and they to eventually burn up in earth's atmosphere.
NASA had to render a decision for it couldn't afford
both. The X-15 was achieving records in speed and altitude
but would have to go 3x faster to reach space. When
President Kennedy set the goal of a moon landing the choice
had been made for them: you couldn't land a plane on the
moon! Nonetheless, in '62 plans existed for a space shuttle-
type glider, X-20 (aka Dyna Soar - for DYNAmic SOARing)
to be launched by a Titan 3 into orbit (The Titan 2 launched
the Gemini spacecraft into orbit in our 2-man program of 10
flights; Titan 4 is currently our largest and most powerful rocket).
Six pilots were selected, the program was canceled in
'63, less than a year before its hoped for first flight - lack of
funds. The Air Force had BIG plans for their own version. Not a
total loss - our NASA is always thinking -. R & D was used in
Space Shuttle program.
There are three basic types of airplane wings: low, medium
and high aspect ratios. Wing Loading: The mass of the
aircraft divided by the area of the wing  (upper surface of
wings).  High aspect ratio indicates long, narrow wings - less
fuel needed to maintain constant speed, less maneuverability;
low aspect ratio indicates short, wide wings - more fuel needed to
keep at constant speed, swift maneuverability,  (examples: most
fighter planes; X-15). A glider will be light and have long, narrow
wings. A plane not a glider can lift off at a lower speed than a
plane with short, stubby wings or can carry a heavier load  when
the speeds are the same (most high altitude subsonic crafts
such as airliners).
Clarification: In "Hermes BIG Challenge" we stated that sounding
rockets are sent between 30 and 900 miles up. Actually, they are
most commonly used between 30 and 120 miles up: this is a region
too high for balloons and too low for sats to gather data. The
flights are sub-orbital: up and down on an arc.

HERMES' BIG CHALLENGE TO NASA: CHEAT THANATOS
                            Sub-Title: Atlas will Upset
by Richard DePersio with Citizen Journalist

The death vigil has been launched. In attendance: BO who
has charged Thanatos with the rapid death of NASA; Mitt
who, if elected, would inhibit, not stop, the demise.
Hermes has concocted a recipe to cheat Thanatos a la
Sisyphus. "NASA, says Hermes, "must go BIG." BIG would
serve a two-fold purpose: restore morale to NASA and
excite the public - who will pressure White House and
Congress to issue a stay of execution.
BIG means nuclear thermal. (Please read articles on the
stages below concerning: Project NERVA; Saturn S-N;
current NT R & D). We have been BIG proponents of NT for
a long time. There will be members of congress and the
public whose opposition will be over safety concerns;
concerns which NASA can overcome even if NT stage is
on launch pad (a traditional chemical stage or two will
lift to orbit, NT would not be ignited on earth, nonetheless,
safety must be maintained regarding fission reactor and
hydrogen propellant. NASA might be able to construct the
NT rocket in low earth orbit - up to 600 miles or on moon).
NASA hasn't made NT a priority. It must think BIG!
The rocket of choice for solar system exploration: Mars;
moons of Mars; asteroids; the outer planets. It would mean
reasonable transit times to and from destinations and it
would be cost-effective. (Some engineers contend that
NERVA facilities are salvagable; reactivating them may
 save $$$s).
NASA and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency) have partnered for the "100 Hundred
Year Starship Project." Initial funding: DARPA - $1 million;
NASA - $100,000. Hopefully, 10:1 ratio will be  maintained.
It will develop interstellar spacecraft and launch system
and create spin-off technologies a long the way (will largely
justify costs; NASA has been completely or partially
responsible for over 30,000 discoveries and inventions
since its inception in '58 - one of the few successful
components of fed gov and can be constitutionally justified
 unlike most of fed gov!).
While NT rockets are the rockets of choice for solar
system travel, it is insufficient for interstellar travel. However,
NT can open up the solar system and its resources to
enable interstellar missions. Hopefully, NT research will,
therefore, become part of "100 Hundred Year Starship
project." NASA must enhance its own sending for NT
(spin-offs may help us become energy independent).
     Interstellar possibilities...Solar Sail: laser beam
supplying pressure, manned, hundreds of miles in diameter,
maximum speed: 10% the speed of light, time to nearest
star: 45 years; Nuclear Pulse Propulsion, manned,
nuclear bomblets, exploded behind craft, maximum speed:
5%, 90 years (see blue section below); Nuclear Fusion
Rocket (way beyond our present  ability), fuse deuterium
and He-3 (plentiful and cheap to get on moon, see lower
stages) for propulsion), 15%, 35 years.
Pure Science: Increasing man's reservoir of knowledge -
an exciting and beautiful thing, It's what makes us human.
Over time Pure Science finds applications (aka spin-offs,
aka Applied Science) making living more enjoyable and
comfortable. Get revved-up!
You must think BIG to enjoy BIG benefits!!!
Atmospheric physicists consider an altitude of about 300
miles as marking the beginning of space. The exosphere is
about 300 to 6000 miles above the earth. It is considered the
lower part of space. While aeronautical and aerospace
engineers identify 62 miles up as the beginning of space. The
German V2 during a test become the first man-made object
to reach space: it attained an altitude of 100. A few U.S.
X-15s flew above 62 miles. Spacecraft and satellites orbit
above 100 miles. Sounding rockets study the atmosphere
between 30 and 900 miles up.
As you ascend in the air, temperature and density decreases.
Let's have our imaginary airplane fly to a higher altitude. It
acquires the same speed that it enjoyed at the lower
altitude but the density is lower, therefore the amount of air
diverted has been lowered (See "Hermes has a Message," two
stages down, "Hermes has more Messengers"). To maintain a
constant lift, the angle of attack
(the leading edge of wing must rise) to compensate for the
reduction in air diverted. The velocity of the diverted downward
air increases. Speed is the same: lower density, higher
downward velocity; higher density, lower downward velocity.
Remember: Downward air, lift of wing; action-reaction.
Orion is teeming with compliments. Named after him:
a constellation; a nebula; an association of dozens of hot, new
stars. Let's not forget the Orion spur on which resides the
solar system ("Urania Presents" at
www.comsat-ak.blogspot.com ) Orion: "Aren't you forgetting
something? Rocketry." The Orion Sounding Rocket and the
Orion Spacecraft with heavy-lifter. Also: Orion was an
experimental model of the exploding fission bombs tested in
'68-'70 (explosives not fission bombs were employed). Orion:
"Would ever you do, don't tell Atlas ("Is there a God"/Urania
Moons You" at comsat) Sagittarius and Centaurus ("Urania
Presents" at comsat). You know how jealous they get!"
*The Dog Star follows Orion across the sky.
** Pigeons. Zeus having taken pity on them turned them
into pigeons and then  made them a constellation, Pleiades.
Was that a favor!?! Eventually, Orion is turned into a
constellation with the unreachable Pleiades ahead of him.
Gods play hardball!
We know Atlas is already distraught. Don't bring up
Pleiades if you see him - they were his daughters!

                                 HERMES: LADIES, FLY ME!!!
by Richard DePersio and Citizen Journalist

Hermes: "I just got back from visiting with Urania at
www.comsat-ak.blogspot.com While Bacchus graciously
supplied the wine (I often fly high with or without wine; but
always with the nectar of the gods), I don't appreciate his
being around and competing for Urania's affections...Below
learn some of my secrets as regards flight."

So what keeps a plane up, you ask...When in cruise
(straight-and-level flight: not changing speed, direction or
altitude), the lift on the airplane is equal to its weight; the
trust produced by the engine is equal to the drag, which is
caused by air friction and the work done to produce the lift.
If your engine creates more thrust or if you raise the
leading edge of the wings, the plane will move faster and
ascend; conversely, lowering power or lowing the angle
that the leading edge makes with the flight path will lower
your altitude. (Visit posts one stage down).
The myth of centrifugal force...Orbital motion is often
described as a balance between two forces, the force of
gravitation...let's say...pulling the moon toward the earth,
and the outward 'centrifugal force' that keeps the moon
from falling into the earth. This simplification is more
confusing than explanatory.
If you whirl a stone around over your head at the end
of a string, you feel a tug in the string; the stone pulls with a
mutual force on the string (Newton's Third Law of Motion).
There is no outside force pulling the stone away from you.
If there were and the string were to break, the stone would
move racially away from you. Instead it moves in the
direction of its motion.
As diagram illustrates, an object in orbit falls around the
more massive object (go one stage down). If the more
massive object were to disappear, the body would move at
a right angle with respect to where the body had once been
not 180 degrees.
There is no centrifugal force (cf) in orbital motion. In the
case of the moon, no force is pulling outward on the moon
 to balance the attraction between the moon and the earth;
if there were such a balance of forces, the moon would
either not move at all or would move in a straight line (as
predicted by Newton's First Law of Motion).
Many writers claim the cf is a reaction force to gravity
(Newton's Third Law). This too is incorrect. The reaction to
the earth's gravitational force on the moon is the moon's
gravitational force on earth - opposite to the direction of
fictitious cf.
Gravity-assist or fly-by or sling-shot maneuver...if a space
probe or spacecraft were to fly close to a planet, it can use
the gravitational pull of the planet to increase its speed or
change its direction or both. (The spacecraft also alters
the speed of the planet {Newton's Third Law} but this
change is imperceptibly small). The direction that the
spacecraft approaches the planet, and whether it passes
on front of or behind it, determines the amount the
spacecraft speeds up or slow down. It constitutes a tricky
maneuver in celestial mechanics. Using gravity this way,
saves both time and fuel (and $$$s) and allows the
spacecraft to carry a heavier payload.
(Take you multi-stage rocket {Hermes permitting} all
around this Vulcan-designed/built comsat).

                                 HERMES has a MESSAGE
by Richard DePersio and Citizen Journalist

Strange but true: During and prior to WW2, the truth was
taught in elementary/high schools, colleges, flight training
and aeronautical engineering courses concerning lift and what
keeps a plane in the air. It is inexplicable as to why this
had changed after the war to the present in all but
aeronautical engineering.
Un-true: Misapplication of Bernoulli Principle - Faster
moving air applies a lower perpendicular pressure (called
static pressure) than slower moving air. The wing of a plane
is designed so the air will move slower under the wing,
thereby, created higher pressure than that being applied to
the top. The air on top is moving faster, thereby, generating
less pressure. This enables a plane to stay in the air. Lift
opposes the weight of the plane or the effect of gravity.
True: The wing causes the air to move downward (action)
causing the wing to rise (reaction). Newton's Third Law states
that for every action there must be a reaction. the wing
produces lift by diverting air down. Just like a propeller
produces thrust by pushing air back. The air is shot back
and the plane moves forward. (Thrust opposes drag).
The Bernoulli Principle is only valid in a closed system
such as a tube. Air will mover faster through the narrower
part of the tube and exert less static pressure. The wing is
in an open system (the air is not confined) and, as a result,
the static pressure is the same as the surrounding
environment.
The genius of Galileo...Imagine an inclined - inclined at 40
degrees facing another 40 degree inclined plane. A ball is
placed at a certain height on the first plane. You release the
ball, it will attain the same height on the second plane. Now,
imagine that the second plane is 20 degrees. The ball would
still attain the same height. Galileo reasoned the if the second
plane were flat (180 degrees) that the ball, unable to reach
the desired height, would keep moving in the same direction
and at the same speed (if there were no friction and air
resistance). Newton refined it and it became. Third Law of
Motion.
Around and around...The earth is a sphere and drops about 5
meters in every 8,000 meters or 8 kilometers.* If a ball were
dropped from a height of about 5 meters (from the third floor),
it would take it about a second to hit the ground. Now, let's
imagine that it is thrown horizontally. It still takes a second to
hit the ground (gravity brings it down). It might have traveled,
say, 50 meters. Now, picture this: If it could be thrown so that
on one second it traveled 8 kilometers along, it would have
again dropped the 5 meters, but the earth would have curved
down 5 meters. The ball would still be  5 meters above the
ground. If there were no air creating air resistance and it didn't
hit anything, it would continue traveling at 8 kilometers per
second, dropping 5 meters every second; it would remain 5
meters above the earth's surface.
(Of course, the above is hypothetical not only because
there is air and obstacles but because of the prohibitive
energy requirement. An object orbiting at an altitude of about
300 miles has to move at about 27,000 kilometers an hour. We
guess that an object would have to move  in excess of a
100,000 miles. On earth, we have only attained a velocity
25,000 miles {escape velocity; object leaves earth and doesn't
orbit - direct route, usually, we launch at less than that
velocity, placing space probe or spacecraft into a parking orbit
followed by another burn {firing of the engine to generate thrust
or propulsion} to escape - it's cheaper this way}. While it
requires more energy pr thrust to place an object into a higher
orbit, once there it moves slower; higher orbit, slower velocity).
When a plane is cruising -its speed and direction are constant;
thrust = drag, lift = weight. Obviously, planes rise and descend.
You can increase altitude by increasing speed or by raising the
leading edge of the wing (changing the angle of attack). Now,
you're up higher and must reduce speed or  lower  the wing's
angle with respect to straight and level flight. to achieve cruising
 speed at this altitude.
You're in orbit and you want to go to a higher or a lower orbit.
Fire engine: you're speed increases and you move upward.
Gravity slows you down and now you orbiting at the required
speed for this altitude - less than lower orbit. To lower orbit,
turn you spacecraft around and fire engine in direction
opposite to the direction that you are moving. You're moving
too slowly for this orbit and fall. Gravity accelerates you until
your moving at the higher speed of this orbit. Size of thrust
determines how high or low that you go.
*1 kilometer = .6 miles. Citizen Journalist: "We are on our third
attempt in ten years to learn the metric system. All but two
countries have converting from British System to Metric
System - the US is one and Great Britain isn't the other!
Plato: "Good people don't need laws to tell them to act
responsibly while bad people will find away around them."
Hermes: "I hear that you're zipping all over the place like I do.
