Subject: SHE ONLY had TIME for a SHORT ONE - Part Two

Subtitle: Married to Cynicism, Hopelessness, and the Veiled Lady
                                                 by Richard DePersio
(all comsats listed and described at groups.google.com/group/rickcosmos-eclectic)

Why Does the U.S. Mint Use a Private Firm - UPS - to Ship its Coin Sets?

"Why would anyone, even a government agency, the boringly
reliable United Parcel Service when it could experience the
excitement and sense of danger in using the United States Parcel
Service to ship its coin sets. By using the USPS every orders fate
could be a potentially unsolved mystery.
Of course, every governmental agency has its own budget to worry
about. If a government office feels it can save money or save time
using a private company, it is under no obligation to throw its business
                     to a government agency.
The U.S. Mint actually does use the USPS to deliver some coin orders.
...Department of the Treasury {spokesman}: 'In making the determination as
to which service to use. we look at the product we are shipping and the
cost involved, taking into consideration value, weight and distance.
Cost is a concern to us. There are substantial savings to be realized in
shipping coins by UPS. On an annual basis, we save...by using UPS...
UPS insures all packages against loss or damage.
The Mints programs are self-supporting. It is our responsibility to manage
the coin programs in the most effective and economical manner as
                    possible...'"

Obama's healthcare reform will give fed gov control of an additional 20% of the economy
and pave the way toward socialized medicine. Gov control of Medicare and Medicaid:
billions of dollars in debt and fraught with billions of dollars of fraud.
The post office, Amtrak, the airline industry, the auto industry, the mortgage industry,
the public school system, social security, urban development etc., etc. and etc.are in a       mess because of gov and/or unions. Unions dictate to fed, state and local govs.
There are a few states in which drivers can use public highway lane for free or private company lane for a price and most choose latter: no pot holes, disabled cars quickly  removed. From a constitutional and economic perspective much of what gov does should     be privatized. Things would be more efficient and less costly or, in some cases, people     would be willing to pay for better service.

PAID NOT TO WORK...Phase out subsidies to utilities, oil industry, corporate farms, etc.
and let free market forces operate. Gov. will pay farms to produce less so the food
prices won't take a precipitous fall and hurt the agricultural industry. It is
used in some industries to prevent prices from going too high or too low, to encourage
hiring, preventing lay-offs, to help an industry which is chronically unprofitable, make
certain U.S. products remain competitive against imports.
You are hollering: Some of those things are good and make sense. Problem:
subsidies are renewed annually. They should only come into play when absolutely
necessary and as a last resort: a dire emergency situation and that shouldn't include
keeping a perpetually failing industry afloat!
Another form of a subsidy: Gov guaranteeing a lender payment if a borrower
defaults: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, student loans, small business loans, etc. We are
suppose to be in a capitalistic society: Lender takes a risk or not, Uncle Sam shouldn't
be responsible if an unwise loan is granted by a lender or a borrower is unable to meet
his obligations. Obama took over low interest student loans from banks - that isn't a
constitutional role for gov. Banks issue student loans based on family income and can
refinance. Obama will quickly assume bad student loan at taxpayer expense. Your money
is his money!
Another type: National Science Foundation. It was created to give colleges and
universities grants to do basic science or pure science. You know how gov programs are.
You create a monster that must grow. Over time grants extended to engineering (an
applied science), social and behavioral sciences (studying gay Eskimos! - true.). Science
and math. Education. Private companies do their own pure and applied science
research and give more grants to colleges - let them do more - - they profit from it. NSF  should return to original mandate. Let rich alumni do more too.

And another thing: Give land back to states!!! Fed gov owns between 3% and 75% of
every state for national parks (determine size of parks; profits shared with states - states  should get all and determine which portion of land can be used for drilling
or lumbering (money from leases shared with states - states should get all - - its stolen land!).

Let me be the first to congratulate Rick: He didn't A.D.D. His first non-A.D.D. article.
Of course, he got by with a little help from his 'friends'!
                               TO BE CONTINUED...
